When it comes to a dinner party seating plan, we all know the traditional rules of how to seat guests for table diplomacy:
🌸 There is the old adage that “six seats itself,” in which the host and hostess anchor the ends of the dining room table, allowing the other two couples to easily mix.
🌸 For dinner parties of more than six, we traditionally rely on alternating gentleman-lady placements.
🌸 There is even what is informally called the “Quaker style”—seating all the gentlemen on one side of the table and the ladies on the other, which can be an amusing technique for very large banquet tables, such as one we experienced atBallyfin Demesne, a stupendous Irish Country estate.
BUT now… I have a brilliant new “2-2-2 seating technique” that I learned from my dear friend Kathy Maxwell. It is absolute perfection, especially for guests who may not know one another well!
Here is the backstory. Three wonderful CEO.org couples we know cruised from Naples over to Palm Beach, docking their boats at the marina at the end of Worth Avenue. After gathering at our home for cocktails, we strolled down Worth Avenue to charming Renato’s for dinner.
As we were being shown to our table, Kathy turned to me and asked, “Should we do the 2-2-2 method?”
I must confess, I looked at her with curiosity and asked what it was. To my delight, the other couples immediately nodded in agreement—they already knew the secret!
What is the 2-2-2 Method?
This arrangement is absolute magic for a round table, but it can also be used beautifully at a rectangular one. Instead of alternating individual gentlemen and ladies, you seat guests in pairs: two ladies, then two gentlemen, then two ladies, and so on.
Why It Is Absolutely Brilliant
This pattern ensures that married couples remain separate to encourage fresh conversation, and with two ladies sitting side-by-side, you have the wonderful flexibility to turn and enjoy a delightful, intimate chat with your dear girlfriend on one side, or pivot to engage with the dashing gentleman on your other side. The same goes for the gentlemen—they have a friend to talk shop/sports with on one side, and a lovely lady to converse with on the other!
The 2-2-2 seating arrangement gave me the most marvelous opportunity to get to know the gentleman seated to my left better while still catching up with Kathy on my right. It is a true win-win for table conversation! It breaks the mold just enough to make the evening feel wonderfully lively, effortlessly engaging, and beautifully memorable.
“A dinner party should be like a gentle symphony—each guest bringing their own instrument to the melody of the evening.”

So, the next time you gather a group of friends, try the 2-2-2 method and let me know how it transforms your evening!
And a heartfelt thank-you to Kathy for allowing me to share her marvelous seating secret with all of you!
Xx Cheers!
