The quintessence of genteel living is found in the gracious intentionality of our interactions with others! Throughout the year, especially spring and summer, many of us are invited to attend some of life’s most significant milestones—from baptisms and confirmations to graduations and weddings. A truly thoughtful guest “steps up to the plate” by taking the initiative to introduce themselves to the hosts (if they do not already know them), and just as importantly, to the hosts’ parents or grandparents.
While our focus is naturally on the guest of honor, there is a secret to being a truly gracious guest that many overlook- making a concerted effort to engage with the family’s elders. Often, elderly parents, relatives, and grandparents can feel a bit left out at large functions… and out-of-town guests, too. Because they may not know many of the other guests, they tend to sit quietly and observe from the sidelines. When you take the moment to introduce yourself and offer a kind word, it is a magnificent gift to the hosts! It is a nod of appreciation that acknowledges their family and friends. This makes their loved ones feel truly valued and takes the burden off the hosts trying to entertain them while also hosting the event!
A courtesy when speaking with an elder is to try and give them your full attention for just a few minutes. In our fast-paced world, being truly ‘present’ is perhaps the most elegant gift of all.
A significant “no-no” in the world of lovely living is failing to express gratitude to the hosts of any celebration. If you find yourself at a wedding reception and do not know the parents of the bride, it is a proper “must” to seek them out, and the groom’s parents, too. Introduce yourself and offer a warm thank you for their hospitality.
True elegance is about “the art” of making everyone around you feel comfortable, appreciated, and seen. By extending your warmth to other guests, you are practicing the highest form of graciousness. And, your hosts will be ever so grateful for your efforts!
